A total of €490,000 in AVEK’s demo grants were awarded to 26 different projects. DigiDemo grants totalled €340,000 and CreaDemo grants €150,000.

A total of €110,000 was awarded to 22 projects. There were 180 applications for concept support, which is around 140% more than in 2022. The application period for demo grants is now open.

The first call to open is for concept support. The grants support the development of new cultural content, innovation in creative industry products and services, and cooperation between the cultural sector and other sectors. A total of 600,000 euros will be distributed from the separate funding allocated by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The use of cultural content on digital platforms is growing, but less and less of the revenue goes to the authors. At this summer’s SuomiAreena, authors called for stronger measures from policy-makers to ensure that people can make a living from the digital use of their works, now and in the future.

The DigiDemo and CreaDemo grants awarded by AVEK to the creative industries will be cut by half in 2021. Distributed for almost 20 years, these grants are funded from a special appropriation granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture that comes from profits obtained from gaming operations. AVEK’s product development support has helped companies and products such as Supercell, Gigglebug Entertainment, Arilyn and Oikiat Design’s Vaatelaastari (FabPatch) get started. The drastic decrease in the amount of financial support is a new blow to the creative industries and threatens their reform and innovation.

A decade’s worth of digitised newspapers and magazines were made available when the National Library of Finland made all newspapers and magazines published in Finland by 31 December 1939 available. The newspapers and magazines are available to the public online at digi.kansalliskirjasto.fi. The extension of the collection is based on an agreement about the licences concerning the newspapers and magazines between the National Library of Finland and Kopiosto.

In the next three years, the National Library of Finland will digitise all Swedish-language newspapers published in Finland. The project is made possible by the grants worth a total of EUR 1.85 million awarded by eight Finland-Swedish funds and foundations. The newspapers will be made available online and in archives and legal deposit collections in Helsinki, Mariehamn, Vaasa and Turku, among others. Agreements about licences have been made with Kopiosto.
